Crafting Mobile Capture Experience for Medical Professionals

Perceptive Software
Summer 2013

The company was in the process of moving to a new version, with software across platforms (desktop, web, tablet, and smartphone). One of the pieces of their very large software is mobile capture, with the purpose of securely capturing photos into the larger system.

Project included: user stories, wireframes, design critique

Project GOals

I was tasked with porting the existing design for small form mobile (smartphone) to a tablet version. I was working almost exclusively from the existing small form design, which had been constructed by a designer no longer with the company. I spent some time with the existing design, both offering feedback and formulating questions about the requirements for the tablet version. Some of the starter wireframes are shown below.

User STories

To accompany my designs, I also developed user stories to inform decisions. I accompanied each with a "Day in the Life" narrative, app use motivation, and ideal use pattern. Below you can an example, Susan.

Day in the Life

Susan goes on many house visits every day. Depending on the day, she may go alone or with a partner. She has a pre-set schedule of who she will be calling on and brings the families’ basic information on a barcoded sheet with her in order to refresh on their case before the visit. Having the basic information allows her to make sure photos are associated with the correct family. In order to be as minimally invasive as possible, Susan prefers to get in and out of homes as quickly as she is able while still collecting thorough information. Because of this, she takes pictures of any areas of note while touring the home, but does not like to write her notes or categorize the photos while still with the family. Due to the variety of locations, Susan prefers to not rely on WiFi being available, and processes all of her notes and photos at the close of the day when she returns to the office.

Goals

  • Susan wants to make sure photos are associated with the right family

  • Susan needs confirmation that her photos were taken properly and will be saved for her to revisit

  • Susan desires to make the visits as quick and noninvasive as possible

User Journeys

I mapped out the various paths users can take within the app. The diagram is to the left, with the main interactions being Capture, Access Existing Photos, and Document Creation.
